I know what it is like to need help with no money, no insurance and nobody left who picks up the phone. It is a specific kind of hopeless. It is also not the end of the road.
Start with these
- SAMHSA National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357. Free, confidential, 24 hours a day, English and Spanish. They refer to state funded treatment and sliding scale facilities, and nobody is paid based on where you land.
- findtreatment.gov lets you filter for places that accept no payment or use a sliding scale.
- Your state substance abuse agency. Every state has one and every state has publicly funded treatment. Search your state name plus substance abuse services.
- Medicaid. Rules vary by state and plenty of people who assume they do not qualify actually do. Substance use treatment is a covered benefit.
- Federally Qualified Health Centers. Sliding scale by law, and many provide medication for opioid use disorder directly.
- Free meetings. AA, NA, SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery. No cost, no insurance, no waiting list, tonight.
Withdrawal from alcohol and from benzodiazepines can kill you. That is not a figure of speech. If you are physically dependent on either, go to an emergency room. They cannot turn you away because you cannot pay. Do not try to tough that one out at home to save money.
What we do
We take the time to actually understand your situation. Not your policy number. What is going on, what you have tried, what exists where you live, who you have around you.
Then we do everything we can to help you find somewhere that will take you. Sometimes that is a facility. Often it is a state program, a sliding scale clinic, or a combination nobody handed you as a package.
We are not paid whether you get in or not. This is the part of it I care about most, because it is the part I needed and did not get.
